Song of the Day: The Ocean - Abyssopelagic I: Boundless Vasts

     In the last couple of weeks I've read several "best of the year so far" lists. While I don't know if I agree with the necessity of doing such a list, I do agree completely with at least one selection I've seen crop up repeatedly.

Song of the Day: The Safety FIre - Animal King

     All the talk of late re: The Safety Fire seems to be about their forthcoming sophomore disc, which is all well and good. But let's not forget the strength of their first album.

     I'm once again seeing a lot of traffic from Russia. I suspect that many of you are, in fact, robots. But if some of you are real people, well then today's song is for you.

     Last chance to dance, people, because 90's Week is wrapping up today. But before we go, there's one band for whom the 90's were formative years and without whom I wouldn't be the metalhead I am today.

Song of the Day: Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade

     We're almost done our trip through the 90's, but such a journey could hardly be called completed without a song by today's band.

Song of the Day: Foo Fighters - My Hero

     I suppose a Nirvana song might be a somewhat obvious (some would say obligatory) choice for a 90's Week song. But an album like Nevermind, while monumental, had less influence on me personally than another album by a Nirvana alumnus.

Song of the Day: Bran Van 3000 - Drinking in L.A.

     Today's 90's Week Song of the Day is another one of those songs pretty much guaranteed to get at least somebody in the room singing along. Provided, that is, you're Canadian. Apparently this song never really caught on elsewhere.

Song of the Day: Radiohead - Karma Police

     90's Week rolls along apace this afternoon, and today we're going with one of those songs that'll get everyone in the room at a party singing. Bonus points if you can play it on guitar or piano.

Song of the Day: Red Hot Chili Peppers - Suck My Kiss

     Yesterday's Song of the Day about Blur has given me an idea: impromptu theme week!

     Can you guess the theme? No, it's not Britpop Week. Nope, not Damon Albarn week either. Give up? OK, it's 90's Week! A week of kick-ass songs from my youth, and maybe yours as well. There's going to be some nostalgia here, sure, but I'm also aiming to pick songs that have stood the proverbial (read: cliche?) test of time, songs that I still dig today.

     So for day two of this journey through the ages we're funkifying things with "Suck My Kiss" from the absolute classic Chili Peppers album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Lay back and accept the sweet, sweet funking.

     Nostalgia is a driving force around here at Loud Noises. Some bands, like Sepultura, remind you why you got into heavy music in the first place. Other bands remind you why you got into other genres. Blur is one of those bands.

Song of the Day: Devin Townsend - Grace

     There's absolutely no denying that Devin Townsend is stupidly talented. I've always been more of a fan of his production work than his personal musical output -- his production credits include Darkest Hour's Undoing Ruin and Deliver Us as well as Misery Signals' Of Malice and the Magnum Heart and Controller, just to name some of my faves -- but Devin can play a lick or two on the guitar too, and carry a decent tune, and keep a beat...

Song of the Day: Sepultura - Roots Bloody Roots

     I just read that Sepulturaare readying a new album for release in the fall, and while I've never been a huge Sepultura fan, the news did bring me back to a time in my youth when a certain Sepultura song with I'm sure we're all familiar started me on the road to heavy music I've been following ever since.

     I don't know what the weather's been like lately wherever you are, but here it's been 40 C plus with the humidity for the past couple of days. But right now I can hear the sounds of rain outside, hopefully breaking this heat a little.

     I've no doubt that pop proggers Coheed and Cambria earned themselves a bunch of new fans with last fall's The Afterman: Ascension and this spring's The Afterman: Descension. Maybe you're among them.

     If Loud Noises were a drinking game, one of the things that would cause you to take a drink would be when a cool song for the Song of the Day falls into my lap via the shuffle of either my mp3 player or my PC playlist. So drink, bitch.

Song for the 12th: Scale the Summit - The Dark Horse

     Well hey there, stranger. Miss me?

     I won't bore you with a lengthy tale of why I took the weekend off. In a nutshell, however, the gist is that I've been house- and dog-sitting out in the country and my internet access has been spotty at best. But fear not, lost soul, for I still have songs for you that I was going to talk about over the weekend, and you're gonna get 'em all at once!

     Starting with a song from everybody's favourite instrumetal band Scale the Summit. I just recently got my copy of The Migration and I've been rockin' it pretty often in the car. It's got a bunch of tracks on it that do a good job of showcasing what it is that Scale the Summit does so well, but for today (or rather for Friday) we're going with "The Dark Horse". Climb into the saddle and turn it up whilst you await the next of the weekend's songs.
