Song of the Day: Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower

Evening kids, it's your friendly neighbourhood Beardy here with the final day of Under of the Covers of Darkness Week. There's so many things I could have picked for today (and maybe some of those possibilities will show up as future songs, so stay tuned...) but I've decided to go with a hall of fame, honourable mention, lifetime achievement type pick. Since this week's theme was covers, today's song is arguably the cover to end all covers.

Your cover today is Jimi Hendrix's "All Along the Watchtower" from 1968's Electric Ladyland which, whether or not you are aware of it, is actually a Bob Dylan song from his 1967 album John Wesley Harding. Now, given that this is supposed to be a metal/heavy music blog, you might ask how this cover wormed its way onto a week-long list like this. But think about it: can you think of how Bob Dylan's original goes, right now, in your head? Probably not, but I'll bet you can imagine how Hendrix's version goes. It's a cover so ubiquitous it's almost supplanted the original. That kind of power merits a honourable mention in any discussion of good cover songs.

So there you have it: Under the Covers of Darkness Week is done. Hope you've enjoyed it, because tomorrow it's back to regularly scheduled programming. Until then!
