Friday: The Room Colored Charlatan - Introspection

Last year's Primitives from The Room Colored Charlatan flew a bit under the radar.I saw it mentioned every once in a while on one site or another, but not as much as it maybe should have been. But now that the band's got a new single out, perhaps they've got another kick at the can, so to speak.

"Introspection" sounds like a refinement of what was already good about The Room Colored Charlatan on Primitives: tasty grooves, a little dreamscape atmosphere here and there, even a few flashes of tasteful technicality. Turn those things up a couple of notches, and you've got a decent idea of the current state of the band's sound. No word on when further new material will come out, so for now you'll just have to chew on "Introspection".

Monday: The Healing - Transcedence

Your Monday song is another one of those Facebook feed finds, this time coming to me courtesy of the feed of The Room Colored Charlatan.

Charlatan shared this one a week or two ago, but it's taken a bit to grow on me enough to become a Song of the Day. Part of the reason for such a slow burn might be that "Transcendence", the first video release from The Healing's debut EP of the same name, is pretty straight-forward, unrevolutionary melo-djent metalcore.

Which isn't to say it isn't solid. "Transcendence" has some groove to it, and a big melodic chorus with head-sticking potential. Come to think of it, that's a big reason why the aforementioned slow burn of digging this song eventually became an actual flame: these guys sound like they have a bunch of potential.

Assuming their style of "progressive metalcore" (often a byword for that onomatopoeic sound we all love) doesn't completely dry up before they get what they can out of it, I can see The Healing really being a name an album or two from now. If they can take their strong senses of rhythm and melody and break out of their djenre with them, "Transcendence" might just be the tip of an iceberg.

The Room Colored Charlatan - Apex Predator

The last couple of days have been about looking ahead to the next month or so of releases, so let's switch it up today and go with something from a record you can go out and listen to the entirety of right now. Instant gratification for the win!

I've just discovered progcore band The Room Colored Charlatan via their recently released sophomore disc Primitives, and thus far I'm finding them very tasty indeed. Things start off sounding a little like your average melo-djentcore act, but by the end of Primitives' opening track its apparent that The Room Colored Charlatan bring more than that to the party.

The right amount of technicality, a healthy helping of solid grooves, a good ear for atmosphere, melody, and riffs, a vocal delivery reminiscent of Karl from Misery Signals -- The Room Colored Charlatan have a lot going for them. So if you're into this kind of thing, I'd say checking them out is a pretty safe bet. Start with "Apex Predator" and go from there.
