Sunday: Psykup - Color Me Blood Red

If only I could derive nutrition and energy from alliteration, I'd never need to sleep or eat again. Maybe some day science will catch up with my dreams, but for the time being I can glean only dorky satisfaction from chaining together words starting with the same letter or, as is the case with your Sunday song, the same letter sound. Yes, it's a wee bit of a cheat, but when you see it I think you'll let me off the hook.

After all, the "p" is silent, so technically giving you a Psykup Sunday is a perfectly cromulent thing to do (bonus points for anyone who gets that particular bit of wordplay). But who or what is Psykup? Well, they're French...and insane. The scattershot trio of influences listed on the band's page at the Season of Mist Bandcamp -- Strapping Young Lad, Primus, and Alice in Chains -- is as minimally descriptive as it is representative of the weirdness that is Psykup.

So let their madness do the talking and check out "Color Me Blood Red", the opening track from Psykup's 2008 album We Love You All. This one's as hard to nail down as Jello, so you should enjoy every minute of its fat, nearly ten minute running time. Go on, get messy.

Saturday: Ne Obliviscaris - Painters of the Tempest, Pt. 2, Mvmt. 3: Curator

Six-piece Australian progressive melo-death band Ne Obliviscaris is one of the latest metal acts to hit a home run with crowdfunding, raising nearly $90,000 with the campaign for their latest album Citadel. Even though the finished product isn't due out until November on the always respectable Season of Mist, just this past week the guys quit teasing and released the first full track from the record.

"Painters of the Tempest, Part 2, Movement 3: Curator" is certainly a mouthful to say, and considering that it's only one part of an epic that spans more than twenty minutes, it certainly sounds a bit lofty too, a bit highbrow. But Ne Obliviscaris doesn't disappoint, delivering a finely-crafted piece of progressive death metal that includes some big melodies, and even some strings, without veering too far over the line of good taste into the realm of cheese.

I have a feeling this album might garner some more buzz closer to its release in November, so get in on the ground floor and impress your friends by hearing something before they do. You know you want to!

Beyond Creation - Elusive Reverence

It's the start of another week, which means you could probably use something a little heavy to get you back into the swing of the grind. How about some proggy death metal from Montreal that's in the vein of Death and Cynic? Yeah, I thought you might like that.

Beyond Creation are getting set to unleash their sophomore record Earthborn Evolution in October via Season of Mist, but you won't have to wait until then to sample the proggy wares on offer here, as the band has recently released the first track from the upcoming album.

"Elusive Reverence" a terrific general example of techy progressive death metal done right, but especially noteworthy is the fretless basswork of one Dominic Forest Lapointe, whose playing will no doubt cause you to become familiar with his name if you're not already. His musicianship, and that of the rest of the band, is top notch without being unnecessarily over the top. There's no waste or wankery here, and one listen to "Elusive Reverence" should be enough to convince you of that.
