Well, it's Friday once again, and you know what that means: I need something particularly cool to see you into the weekend ahead. Lucky for me (and you!) I've got just the thing. I hope you're not just about to head out the door...
Over the past few months I've become quite enamored with Calgary instrumental fusion band Nok Novum, and if you've got an ear for this kind of thing I suggest you get enamored with them too. Their self-titled 2012 debut LP is wall-to-wall goodness, and the couple of singles they've released since are likewise badass.
But since there's been no sophomore LP (yet...come on, guys...) I'll just have to go back to Nok Novum for a showcase of just what kind of awesomeness I'm talking about. So settle in for twelve minutes you won't regret with "GOKOR!" and have a happy Friday night.

Tuesday: Nok Novum - Ghost Farmer
I can almost taste the finish line, can't you? Time for a Tuesday song, and once again the patron providence of New Music has got my back in spades. Instrumental prog fiends, I give you the latest single from Calgary's up-and-coming Nok Novum.
"Ghost Farmer" is a musical journey of absolutely epic proportions -- no surprise if you're familiar with any of Nok Novum's other material. Big, chunky detuned riffs give way to a moody middle section that's equal parts sax and groove before the whole thing heavies back up in a big way. Seven and a half minutes after pressing play, it's all I can do to hit repeat before offering libations to those same small gods in the hopes that someday soon we'll see a full LP from Nok Novum.
Bonus: not only can you listen to this big ol' slab of sexy, you can also watch the guys shred it out in the form of a full-band playthrough video. Just click the song title above, and let the internet's series of tubes do the rest.

Wednesday: Nok Novum - Mummy Trouble
You know I love progressive music, instrumental music, and Canadian music. Your last Wednesday song lies at glorious the intersection of these three worlds. You can thank me later.
We've just gotten word that the next single from Calgary's Nok Novum will come out later next month, so unfortunately there's still a little bit of a wait ahead of us before we get more new material. That means that for now, we have to be content with Nok Novum's self-titled debut album... which isn't anything to complain about, really, because Nok Novum is a wild and wooly adventure in instrumental jazz-fusion.
Just because I can't decide, I'm sticking you with album-opener "Mummy Trouble", an epic that starts out almost jazz-meets-porno-funk, tours through space prog, then shifts to angular metal groove territory before touching back down in funk town. It's a trip. . As a bonus, your video link for this one points to a playthrough vid from the man himself, Nok Novum guitarist Grant Cooper.

Nok Novum - Shiryo
It's Wednesday once again (as it usually is following Tuesday) and man oh man have I got something proggy and groovy for you to hump to.
Canadian instrumental act Nok Novum may not be especially well known at the moment, but if they keep releasing material like their latest single "Shiryo" that's going to change pretty fast. It's eight minutes of groovy, proggy instrumental metal, with just enough free rein given to weird melodic ideas, never too much. "Shiryo" track goes a lot of places without ever feeling either lost and meandery or schizophrenic and disjointed. Ideas don't vanish too early or overstay their welcome, instead being jammed around for what always feels like an appropriate amount of time.
This might sound like an isolated facet of the band's music to get hung up on, but instrumental metal can get old real fast if done wrong. "Shiryo" is a prime example of Nok Novum doing it right. A guy could get pretty into an album's worth of material of this quality, just saying.
