It's not Thursday, either in reality or in messed up "Loud Noises time", but I'm still going to throw it back a bit for a Manson Monday post. Regular readers will know that I have a nostalgia-flavoured spot in my heart for the first few Marilyn Manson albums that I sometimes like to indulge, and bully for you, today is one of those times.
In particular, we're headed for what's probably my favourite Manson album, 1998's Mechanical Animals. This record was of course released at just the right time to hit an adolescent me, but it's also a solid record that I think holds up pretty well to this day, assuming you ever liked it to begin with. I actually jammed it again just the other day, giving me the inspiration to regale you with this rocking number. So please have a go at "Posthuman".

Marilyn Manson - Third Day of a Seven Day Binge
It's taken me a whole week to check the Song of the Day slide, but I'm finally all caught up with the calendar and back on track. And serendipitously, the universe has decided to send me the perfect song for yet another alliterative Monday.
This might come as a bit of a shock to many of you out there, but Marilyn Manson is still making records. I haven't paid much attention to the last couple of them, but that doesn't mean they haven't been made all the same. I can't remember the last time a Manson record got me excited, and I wouldn't say that his forthcoming The Pale Emperor is going to buck that trend, but the first single certainly has my attention.
"Third Day of a Seven Day Binge" is, in my opinion, a good example of what has always been one of Manson's greatest strengths: dark, vaguely creepy pop-rock with perhaps just a hint of sleaze. This stripped-down, fairly mellow number could sit alongside similar offerings from albums gone by ("The Speed of Pain" from Mechanical Animals comes to mind as a loose comparison), and it's the first Manson song in years that I've dug. Check it out and see if it hits you the same.

Album of the Week: Marilyn Manson - Mechanical Animals
It's Monday once again, and even though it's a holiday here in Canada I'm not going to abandon those of you in the rest of the world -- it's Album of the Week time!
This week we're shifting gears a bit, moving from some more modern stuff over the last couple of weeks to an album I consider to be a classic from my youth. Whether or not you consider it to be a classic is up to you, but either way I urge you to spend some time over the next week with Marilyn Manson's 1998 masterpiece Mechanical Animals.
I was never as big a Marilyn Manson fan growing up as some of my friends were. The earlier, "shock rockier" stuff was OK, and so was the later, gothier-type stuff, but right in the middle there was this weird album that bridged gap between the two chapters of Manson's career just as it bridges the gap between the other two chapters of Manson's high-concept rock opera trilogy, Antichrist Superstar and Holy Wood.
That weird album was Mechanical Animals, a 70's glam-infused alt-rock meditation on modernity, celebrity, addiction, alienation, sex... did I miss anything? There's a lot more to Mechanical Animals than I think most people would give Marilyn Manson credit for. For that reason, your homework this week (assuming you're not already a fan of this album like I am) is to look past what you think you know about Marilyn Manson and really give Mechanical Animals a chance to grow on you. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Song of the Day: Marilyn Manson - The Speed of Pain
We're stuck in the past for one more day today before we set out for more modern metal tomorrow, and I think I'm going to slow things down, change the mood up a bit. When Marilyn Manson's Mechanical Animals came out in 1998, that CD didn't leave our stereo systems and discmen for a while. Even now, I can put it on and genuinely appreciate it, rather than just digging it nostalgically. There were a bunch of cool songs on it, but for today I'm picking a song with a not-exactly-metal vibe.
Today's song is "The Speed of Pain" by Marilyn Manson. It's a bit of a slow-burner, but its spacey, psychedelic, Pink Floyd feel is worth the build-up. If you know Mechanical Animals, this'll take you right back, and if you don't, this'll help you get acquainted.
