Saturday the 6th: Cyborg Octopus - Data_M1nefield

Cast your minds into the before time: remember way back when I posted a tasty little number called "Pukefeast Inc." by proggy California deathcore outfit Cyborg Octopus? Well the boys are finally ready to drop an LP on us, and now we've got our first shot at the sweet new material.

"Data_M1nefield" is a seven-minute epic of genre sampling: progressive deathcore is still the general name of the game, but a variety of influences are once again on offer, from synthy keyboards to flashes of tech death to the rad melo-shred solo that provides the track's climax (and kills the video's bad guys to boot). I liked the older Cyborg Octopus stuff when I heard it, and if the step forward in songwriting and musicianship that's on display in "Data_M1nefield" is any indication of the level of quality of the rest of Learning to Breathe, I'm going to be one happy camper. Give this one a spin or two and discover these guys before the rest of the kids on your block do.

The Zenith Passage - Simulated Reality

I'm always on the lookout for new music, and when I discover something fresh I try to present it to you while it's still fresh. Being that I'm not in the business of metal news per se, I often find myself behind the curve on things. Hopefully, however, the Facebook pages of none other than both Cyborg Octopus and Archspire have pointed me in the direction of something you'll dig and that you have yet to hear about anywhere else.

When bands like the aforementioned Cyborg Octopus and Archspire tell you that something is worth checking out, you fucking listen up, which is what I did when both of them shared a link to a pre-production version of a song called "Simulated Reality" by LA death metal outfit The Zenith Passage. And I wasn't disappointed: "Simulated Reality" is a tasty slice of suitable noodly and technical death metal that's got just the right amount of spacey atmosphere and melody sprinkled throughout.

"Simulated Reality" is a pre-production track, so the mix could perhaps use a little work in places, but it's still an indicator that the next effort from The Zenith Passage could well be something to look out for. So take the advice of Cyborg Octopus and Archspire and check out some new The Zenith Passage today.

Cyborg Octopus - Pukefeast Inc.

Yesterday I went with something smooth and jazzy as the soundtrack for your Saturday night chillings, but today I've decided you could use something a little heavier to cap off your weekend and get you set up right for the week to come.

The name of today's band says it all: Cyborg Octopus. If a band with a name like that isn't capable of some awesomeness, then I think we're all pretty much doomed. Lucky for us the band's debut EP Primordial does indeed feature some quality death metal, with some acoustic guitars, some jazzy bits, and a couple of other pinches of various flavours throw in for shits and/or giggles. It might not be the best melange of this kind you've ever heard, but it's still pretty rad, and pretty promising coming from a young band too.

Better still, they're a metal band with a bit of a social conscience, a la Cattle Decapitation or even Gojira. Your song today, "Pukefeast Inc.", is an attack on agribusiness, GMO's, and the general evils of the modern food industry, and it's a tasty slab of what I would label deathcore in the truest sense -- death metal with a little hardcore gravy on top. Don't feel bad about ingesting this particular octopus.
