Song of the Day: Radiohead - Everything in Its Right Place

When I was younger I used to listen to music to help me sleep. That and a lot of books on tape. But as I get older and my musical tastes drift further and further into metal territory, I don't find this as useful a sleep aid.

The best metal is cathartic, intense, and even beautiful, but it's seldom soporific or somnolent. If you're favourite metal band is putting you to sleep, I would argue they're doing something wrong. No, for good sleepy-time music we have to travel to distant genres, and even other times -- my youth, for example.

Your sleepy-time song tonight is "Everything in Its Right Place", the opening track from Radiohead's 2000 album Kid A. This record used to be a favourite of mine for putting on before bed, and its a testament to its stopping power that many nights this would be the only song on the album I could remember hearing before drifting off. Maybe there was something about the concept of everything being in its right place was infinitely soothing. Or maybe I just fell asleep more easily in my youth. Either way.
