Song of the Day: Haji's Kitchen - Sidhartha

Today's song has one main purpose: to showcase what can be done with the bass guitar in modern metal, and what most bands aren't doing. Most of the time the bass is in the background, just minding its own business and not really doing much of anything cool. The guitars, drums, and even vocals usually get most of the attention. But if you've got a guy who can play some bass, and you let him do so, you get this:

Your song today is another from Haji's Kitchen, who I've written about before. They've got some cool bass stuff going on in general, but if you're looking for a lesson in badass bass, check out the epically instrumental "Sidhartha" from last year's Twenty Twelve. What it lacks in Dan Tompkins it more than makes up for in low end, bass solo and all.

  1. I Keep forgetting to post this related video, but just in case the bass solo I was talking about here doesn't give you enough of a instrumentation boner, here's some footage of Derek Blakley from Haji's Kitchen playing through this monster. I honestly watched it like half a dozen times when I first found it. Unreal. Check it:
