Song of the Day: Thrice - Eleanor Rigby

A little over a month ago, Loud Noises had its first theme week when I did Classic Rock Week. Now, maybe classic rock isn't your favourite thing in the world, but I hope the concept of having some sort of running theme for songs from one day to the next isn't too offensive to you, because I've got a couple of ideas for doing it again, and I'm going to do one of them this week.

So what's going to be the theme for the next week of Songs of the Day? Covers, Watson! Every band gets started playin' 'em, and every fan has probably got a list of songs they'd love to hear their favourite band do, so for the next seven days we're going to be looking at metal covers: metal bands covering non-metal songs, non-metal bands covering metal songs, non-metal bands covering non-metal songs in a metal way...if you can dream up the combination, it's probably fair game for what I'm dorkily going to call Under The Covers of Darkness Week here at Loud Noises.

And just to be extra dorky about it, I've even come up with a (loose) thematic bridge between the first Loud Noises theme week and this second one. That loose thematic bridge? The song "Eleanor Rigby". Last time around, I included the original Beatles version, because it's always been one of my favourite Beatles songs. This time, I've got a cover version for you by a band you should by now be pretty familiar with.

Thus, without any further preamble, your song for today is "Eleanor Rigby" as covered by Thrice. I'm not sure when exactly they recorded this cover, but it ultimately ended up appearing on 2005's mid-career retrospective If We Could Only See Us Now. It's not the most inventive or adventurous cover, basically heavying-up the original song, but then sometimes that's just what the doctor ordered. Have a listen right this minute, and leave a comment if you know of a badass cover the world just has to know about.
